Golf

Just two of our Members started playing Golf early in 1995 at Hambrook Driving Range where they met a few Members of another local Charity, so they recruited a few more players and eventually arranged a match between the two Charities at Thornbury Golf Club. Needless to say our guys won that match and over a period several of the opposition decided to join the FHCSG “team”.

Today there are 20 regular players who still practice at Hambrook every Thursday. The golfers have always been prepared to give lessons to new Members who may be “beginners or novices” as the group has a spare set of clubs. Over the years these lessons have proved to be good enough for several Members to move on to other Golf Clubs in their own right!!

Tuesday is another regular day and they play a round of golf at Thornbury with an 8.30 a.m. start every week. Golfers are apparently competitive by nature and so they have to have something to play for! At present they play for a Monthly Medal on one Tuesday each month and throughout they compete for the John Cater Memorial Trophy, the Captain’s Cup, and also hold a Singles Competition.

Away Days have been organised for some time now and the golfers have visited several other Clubs including Dewstow Golf course in South Wales and Broome Manor Golf Course near Swindon, obviously enjoyable because their numbers are normally doubles by guest players for the day.

Whilst away, prizes are awarded for the Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin; players can also pay to enter a Two’s Competition and if this is not won on the day the balance is added to the other “profits” made throughout the year, which are donated to the Group to raise additional funds.
